Design and install

Landscape Exterior Design Service in New Haven, CT

What does Avalanche's landscape design include?

Avalanche Tree and Landscaping LLC designs and installs landscapes for homes and businesses in New Haven, CT. We start with an onsite walkthrough, plan new planting beds, front yards, privacy screens or a full yard layout around your sun, soil, budget and upkeep, then give you a free quote and build it.

A good landscape is planned before anything goes in the ground. Where the sun falls, where water collects, how people walk through the yard and how much time you want to spend on upkeep all shape what will thrive and what will struggle.

Because we also handle tree work, stump grinding and hardscaping, the old shrubs, the stump in the way and the wall the slope needs can all be part of one plan instead of three separate jobs.

Plant smart

Choosing Plants for a Connecticut Landscape

Two things narrow the plant list before style even comes into it.

Hardiness zones

UConn Extension notes that most of Connecticut falls in USDA hardiness zones 6 and 7. Plants rated for those zones can handle our winters, and we match each one to the sun and drainage of its spot.

Banned invasive plants

Connecticut law (CGS 22a-381d) prohibits the sale, transplanting and cultivation of plants on its invasive list that are marked as prohibited. Sale of Japanese and Chinese wisteria has been banned since October 1, 2024, and Callery pear, which includes the Bradford pear, is banned from sale starting October 1, 2027.

Our city

What Industry Is New Haven Known For?

Education and health care. New Haven's economy began in manufacturing, but today more than half of it is services, led by those two sectors. Yale University is the city's largest employer, followed by Yale New Haven Hospital, and other large employers include Southern Connecticut State University, the Knights of Columbus headquarters and Alexion Pharmaceuticals.

That mix shapes the city's properties: campuses, medical offices and businesses that need neat, low-upkeep grounds, and homeowners and landlords who want yards that look good without taking up their weekends. We design for both.

FAQ

Landscape Design Services Questions

Straight answers about landscape design in New Haven. Still unsure? Call (203) 800-3010 or contact us.

What is involved in the landscape design process?

It starts with an onsite walkthrough where we look at the yard and ask how you use it, what you want to spend and how much upkeep you want. We then plan the layout and plants, give you a free quote, and once you approve it, our crew installs the work.

How much does landscape design cost in New Haven, CT?

It depends on the size of the area, how much soil preparation is needed, the number and size of plants, whether the plan includes stone or block work, and how much existing material has to be removed. You get a free quote once the plan is settled.

Do you design landscapes for businesses as well as homes?

Yes. We plan and install landscapes for homeowners and for commercial properties, from a single front bed to entrances, borders and plantings around parking areas.

Can the design match my home and my style?

Yes. We look at the house, the street and what you like, whether that is neat and formal, loose and natural or simply low-maintenance, and choose plants and layouts that suit both the building and the way you live.

Which plants grow well in New Haven?

Connecticut sits mostly in USDA hardiness zones 6 and 7, so plants rated for those zones are a safe start. Within that, the right choice depends on sun, shade, drainage and space, and on avoiding plants that Connecticut has banned as invasive.

Can a retaining wall or stone work be part of the design?

Yes. Walls, steps and stone borders can be planned together with the plantings, and our hardscape and masonry crew builds them.

Who takes care of the landscape after it is installed?

You can look after it yourself, or keep us on for lawn care and seasonal upkeep so the new landscape is maintained by the same team that planted it.
